聖修伯里Antoine de Saint-Exupery 法國里昂名門之後。1921年，輟學接受征召，進入斯特拉斯堡空軍服役。1923年，退役進入民間航空公司任職，開始提筆寫作；作品大多數反映其飛行經驗，處女作《南方航線》(1929年)與《夜間飛行》(1931年)皆在描敘飛行員任務開拓天際的光榮辛苦的事蹟，1939年所出版的《人類的土地》為他贏得了法蘭西學院獎。《小王子》故事背景，1935年聖修伯理欲創新從巴黎飛往西貢的飛行速度紀錄，卻在途中墜落利比亞沙漠的真實經驗；這次險境造就了《小王子》書中闃靜無垠、扣人心弦的場景。1939年，收到二次大戰動員令，擔任偵察機飛行員，1940年法國失陷，流亡美國。在異鄉流亡的日子，聖修伯理完成了《戰鬥飛行員》、《給人質的一封信》、《小王子》大部分內容。1943年，在紐約出版《給人質的一封信》與《小王子》後，聖伯修理回到北非重新加入法國空軍；1944年在一次飛行勤務返航途中被擊落，自此音訊全無，下落不明，結束其充滿冒險
