Dermoscopy (also known as surface microscopy) is a clinical technique which allows the detailed examination of pigmented skin lesions and which is more accurate diagnostically than other clinical approaches. This well-illustrated, highly acclaimed reference is one of the first to document this pioneering technique and provide a complete understanding of the use of dermoscopy. It explains the diagnostic features and examines benign melanocytic, melanoma and non-melanocytic pigmented lesions.
The first edition was widely used by general practitioners, skin cancer specialists and dermatologists. There has been a considerable rewrite for the second edition, reflecting the increase in knowledge in surface microscopy over the intervening six years. Thoroughly updated, this edition also includes a new chapter on computerized monitoring techniques and high-quality colour images of lesions as well as a semi-interactive CD Rom. It will be of interest to any clinician involved in diagnosing pigmented skin lesions and related conditions.
Comments on the first edition:
The illustrations in this book are outstanding. The quality of the photographs of the clinical lesions, the histopathology and the surface microscopy is magnificent. The atlas is an important contribution to the process of improving diagnostic accuracy for melanoma. Anyone who uses a dermatoscope needs to have this book.
Professor Robin Marks
Department of Dermatology, St Vincent"s Hospital, University of Melbourne
Using the atlas as an education intervention resulted in a 39% improvement in the sensitivity for the diagnosis of melanoma by primary care physicians.
